Trapeze Tailpiece Designs
Another (No.2) heavy/fixed trapeze guitar tailpiece (unlike swinging versions) design, with a lower string position. In process from steel, brass and silver. String height coming off the tailpiece is as low as possible, which increases the angle from bridge to soundboard. Welded and silver soldered from steel/brass with silver accouterment.
I'm not sure of the general attitude toward a "swinging" tailpiece, one that self-aligns the strings to point at the bridge. A carved ebony tailpiece on say an arch top guitar will usually incorporate the swinging/hinge methodology. And then there are the Bigsby B7s, etc., with that big cast aluminum hinge. Seems to me a weak point that could cause vibration, alignment and other issues on some setups? Banjos and Resonators usually have a fixed tailpiece, and cheaper entry-level guitars sometimes have stamped, sheet metal tailpieces. This heavy design resists any upward pull of the strings under tension, so I would think pressures are applied downward on the bridge to a greater extent than a straight pull.
